Facilities Summer Spotlight

August 16, 2024

The Wentzville School District, a bustling hub of activity during the school year, underwent a remarkable transformation when the final bell rang for summer. As students eagerly embraced summer vacation, the District’s dedicated facilities team sprung into action, tackling numerous projects designed to optimize learning environments for the upcoming school year.

Operational Technology Upgrades

Technological advancements occurred across the District this summer. Our dedicated team prepared 1,600 iPads for incoming sixth graders, ensuring seamless integration into the digital learning landscape. Additionally, over 550 new audiovisual systems were installed in classrooms and buildings, elevating the multimedia experience for students and educators alike.

Comprehensive Custodial Overhaul

Custodial staff diligently worked to create clean learning spaces. Floors gleamed after stripping and waxing; carpets were rejuvenated through shampooing; and Heritage Elementary received a top-to-bottom deep clean. The team also streamlined storage operations by relocating 33 pallets of surplus materials.

Enhanced Safety and Security Measures

Our Safety and Security Committee approved several safety enhancements that have begun to roll out over the summer. SafeDefend, a company that supports school safety initiatives, will place access-controlled safety boxes in classrooms and offices in every building district-wide. When activated, it immediately informs emergency responders (providing specific location information that expedites emergency response), initiates emergency protocols such as a lockdown, and provides our staff with life safety support tools to help mitigate dangerous situations. Alongside SafeDefend, the District would use common response language to minimize confusion in the event of an emergency.

Window Safety Film has also been installed district-wide to provide an added layer of protection to our buildings.

Improving Accessibility and ADA Compliance

To enhance accessibility, wheelchair-accessible spectator bleachers are being installed at Holt High School (HHS), and a new entrance was added to Pearce Hall. Boone Trail Elementary (BTE) also underwent accessibility improvements.

Boosting Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency was a key focus during the summer overhaul. BTE and Crossroads Elementary (CRE) schools received significant upgrades, including facade and building envelope improvements, as well as tuckpointing and exterior painting at CRE. These enhancements optimize heating and cooling systems, resulting in substantial energy savings.

To further reduce energy consumption, BTE replaced bulky in-classroom HVAC units with a high-efficiency VRV system, while Timberland High School initiated a boiler and cooling tower replacement project. HHS also contributed to energy efficiency efforts by installing four large chillers to replace outdated units and new LED stadium lighting.

General Facility Improvements

Beyond the previously mentioned projects, the District undertook several facility enhancement initiatives. HHS’s welding classroom was transformed with upgraded electrical service, LED lighting, new finishes, and improved ventilation. South Middle School is receiving the finishing touches on a new gymnasium floor, replacing the previously water-damaged flooring. Four playgrounds were installed at several elementary schools to support our Early Childhood Learning programs.

REACH/Early Childhood Center Construction

The construction of our new REACH and Early Childhood Center on the North Point Campus is progressing on schedule. Site work continues with underground utilities, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. Building footings are being poured, walls are being constructed, and underground sanitary plumbing is being installed. Structural steel is expected to arrive in mid-August with roof framing starting later this fall. We look forward to continuing to update the community on this major project as it goes through its phased completion.

“A huge shout-out goes out to our custodial, maintenance, and IT/Tech crews who work tirelessly to make building and technology improvements,” said Josh Schaffer, executive director of facilities.

The summer of 2024 marked a period of remarkable progress for the WSD. The facilities team’s dedication to creating optimal learning environments is evident in the numerous improvements made throughout the District. When students and faculty return to school, they will undoubtedly benefit from these transformative changes.
