New WSD Child Nutrition Department Director

The WSD Board of Education approved the hiring of Gwen Doyle as the new Director of Child Nutrition, beginning January 2, 2020. Ms. Doyle is currently the Assistant Director of Child Nutrition and replaces Susan Raster, who is retiring at the end of December. She's worked with the District since 2006, starting as a long-term substitute office staff member for Child Nutrition.

Doyle said, "I am so grateful for this opportunity. Child Nutrition is my passion and I consider it a great privilege to be able to help the students of WSD perform and excel at their highest level." Hired full-time in August 2008, Doyle diligently worked her way into the position of Assistant Director of Child Nutrition in July 2017. Among other duties, Doyle helped supervise all meal preparation in cafeterias throughout the District, from the hiring of personnel who cook the food to making sure the food meets nutritional guidelines. She makes sure kitchens get the food they need to feed an ever-growing student population within the confines of District budgets, for which she must forecast the availability of USDA commodities. Beyond the kitchens, she also oversees the training of employees in equipment use, standardized recipes, and other skills.

Now with the retirement of current Child Nutrition Director Susan Raster at the end of the calendar year, Doyle will take over at the start of 2020, bringing her extensive experience and institutional knowledge to the position. Doyle has sought to find ways to cut costs to help save taxpayer dollars, and also does research on what the students are eating and not eating to make sure WSD students aren't missing out on the food they need to fuel their success simply because they don't like the food. Further proving her commitment to getting kids fed, Doyle instituted the Lunch Heroes program in the WSD, which offers the opportunity for community members to donate money to help pay off students' lunch balances (call the WSD Child Nutrition offices if you'd like to help). "I am absolutely proud of the Lunch Heroes program," she said, "and am so fortunate to be a part of a community who cares so deeply about each other!"
